Volunteer Opportunities
Summer Pro League Deputy Commissioner / Commissioner
I - Rob Rudin - am looking for a deputy commissioner for the upcoming 2005 pro league.
There's nothing particularly hard about this job. In fact, you get to be involved in the
Pro League Draft, which is the single most fun thing you can be involved in with WAFC (read - open bar).
I'm mostly looking for help with two things - the draft and the tournament. I'll talk about what's needed for
each. If you have interest in either, please email me (Rob) at "rob at wafc dot org" or "webmaster at wafc dot org".
The Draft
Running the draft involves several things. First, we have to get all the captains to the Capital City Brewery
in Shirlington, VA, our usual meeting place. Second, we have to get a list of all of the registered players
from the website. This is easy enough since I also run the website, so I don't have to nag myself to get the
list of players (as opposed to the poor commissioners of rec and corporate league). Then we make a big spreadsheet
of all the players that gets sent to the captains. Then we run the draft. This is FUN. It runs for a few hours.
It might be quicker this year since Mike Navarro won't be at the draft and I won't have to listen to him
complain about not getting to sit next to his friend Steve Helvin, who hopefully will not try to hold me hostage this year
in an attempt to lower his draft ranking so he'll graciously be a captain. I have enough trouble just trying to keep Caner from not
baggaging the entire B+ roster onto his team.
But I digress. The draft is a lot of fun. Afterwards, there's some work in getting the team rosters compiled and sent to all
the captains. Once that's done, the league pretty much runs itself until...
The Tournament
This is what I'd really like some help for. I need someone to help with coordinating this. The tournament is usually at two
field sites on Saturday, so it'd be great to have someone officially in charge at each field site. And I could use help with
all the other logistics. It's not as fun as helping out with the draft, but I'd be very thankful, as would all of the pro
league players, many of whom will thank you for realizing that the tournament doesn't happen without volunteers.
So those are the jobs. As stated in the title, I'm interested in both an assistant and/or someone who would eventually like to
be the fulltime pro league commissioner (and "eventually" can always mean "now", if you so desire). Running pro league is a lot
of fun - in my biased opinion, it's the most fun league to be involved in because of the draft and because you meet so many new
people each year. But obviously at some point, I'd like to hand the reins over. If you have any interest in assisting or being
"The Man/Woman", please let me know and we can talk more about it.
