  • Registration and more information available here, http://www.wafc.org/story/1251.

Summer League 2010 - Next June through August

  • Advanced League - for club level players.  Individuals sign up and are drafted onto a team by captains. Almost all games occur on weeknights, including playoffs at the end of the season, which take place during the first and second weeks of August.
  • Intermediate League - for experienced league players.  Individuals sign up and are randomly placed on teams with an effort to make teams as even as possible.  Games occur on mostly weeknights, with some weekend games, and a two day tournament on a weekend at the end of the season.
  • Rec League - see description above.  Summer rec league games are on weeknights with a two day tournament on a weekend at the middle or end of August.
  • Weekend League - same deal as Rec League, except all the games are played on the weekend.  In 2009, all of the games were played on Saturday.
  • Corporate League - There are three divisions of Corporate league for varying levels of skill.  Teams form themselves and should be affiliated some how (ie. - Everyone works for the same company or organization, Alumni of the same school, etc.).  These games occur on weeknights during the season, including weeknight playoffs at the end of the season which will occur the first couple weeks in August.

Fall League 2010 - next September through November

  • Rec League and five divisions of Clique League (A, B, C, D, E).  Games take place on weekends (Clique on Saturdays, Rec on Sundays).

Winter League 2010

(Questions? Use the Contact form to let us know.)

Clique League

Offered: Fall, Winter, and Spring

A team signs up as a group in one of five divisions (A being the most competitive and E being the least competitive).  Play culminates in a tournament at the end of each season, with only the top teams from each league advancing to day two.

Rec League

Offered: Spring, Summer, and Fall

For players of all abilities, from experienced players to people who have never picked up a disc before,   the goal of rec league is to provide a casual, but structured game, where newer players learn from the more experienced players.  Individuals sign up and are randomly placed on teams with an effort to make teams as even as possible.  Each season culminates with a two day tournament (Sunday/Sunday during Fall and Spring, Saturday/Sunday during the Summer season).  There are some rec league specific rules here: Rec Rules

Summer Weeknight Games

Does anyone have a more specific idea of when games will be played this summer during the weeknight? Are they specific nights generally or does it change every week?

That information will be

That information will be available for each league when registration opens.

As Bryan said, the specific

As Bryan said, the specific nights will be published when registration is ready. Each league will generally have specific nights each week so you'll be able to schedule your summer plans easier. There is some wiggle room though for Fridays and weekends.

Which league to register for?

I'm in D.C. for the summer and I'm looking to register for league, but I'm not sure which one to sign up for. I've played league before. How (un)structured is the Rec League? Do the teams run offenses or is it more like pick-up? I'd like to play at a little higher level than a pick-up game.

Thanks,
m.r.brown

Rec league is meant for newer

Rec league is meant for newer players who want to learn more about ultimate. So, it won't be any super technical offensive or defensive plays, but bring any ideas of things you want to learn, and your captains should be able to work it in. Usually it doesn't go beyond a standard stack and zone offense though. It sounds like either the Rec league or weekend rec are what you're looking for. Intermediate could also be an option if you want something more challenging.

Shirt Monopoly???

I am wondering what the justifications are for
(a) forcing people to buy new shirts
(b) from one favored vendor

I have played WAFC for ~25 years. I have a closet filled with shirts of all colors and stains. I dont need another shirt.

Okay, if for some imaginary reason you think we need shirts, why are you forcing us to buy from one vendor?? There are thousands of great online vendors. Cafepress. Zazzle. Local shops that would pump money into the local community. But no, we have to give money for some wierd reason to one favored shop. That looks real suspicious.

And so if I join two leagues, I will pay for two shirts I dont need. At least when I was paying for discs I didnt need, I got a disc.

Do you have arrangements with Goodwill or some other charity for all the unwanted / unneeded shirts that will be purchased???

Some answers and a request

1) Shirts are being purchased from the vendor that provided the best value to WAFC, namely the lowest price, good quality, and good response time.

2) Players signing up for more than one league, and therefore "paying for more than one shirt" is something that can be discussed next time around (quotes because the $10 increase this season isn't just for the shirts it's also for increased field costs and generally higher league expenses). Perhaps making shirts optional would be the way to go...this is something that was discussed but it makes the whole process a bit tougher (unknown quantity of shirts, extra work on the website, etc.). If people have suggestions on ways to approach this issue please post replies here.

3) People are being forced to buy shirts because WAFC volunteers agreed that it would be a nice thing to add to the league, and it would help promote the WAFC brand (i.e., recruit new players). One of the primary considerations was picking up a nice technical t-shirt for about $10, which is a good deal considering they are normally $15 wholesale and $20-25 retail.

As for the insinuation that someone was getting a kickback from the shirt purchases...that's unfair and offensive. The people who put together this season are unpaid volunteers who work hard to make WAFC work and work well. If we make a mistake with a new initiative, it's a not a nefarious plot to make money or advance a position. Please take a moment to consider the tone in which you offer advice. Sometimes good advice is misconstrued or ignored because it's couched in the wrong way.

If you want to change things, volunteer!

Five Ultimate, the shirt vendor, is an established apparel vendor in the Ultimate community. You can check out their initiatives here, http://fiveultimate.red-forte.com/company/initiatives/.

thanks for doing this

Hey, by the way, I love the shirts - and actually I've always really hated being pressured into buying a team-specific shirt in the summers, because inevitably I end up paying $20/team or else feeling like a jerk because I won't buy a shirt. I know you guys put a ton of work into this, and are probably still sorting through which teams have all their shirts and which don't and what's going on there, but they're really high quality and now when we see the kickball players on the metro we can stare each other down. Or, well, something.

what to do with unwanted shirts

I think if you don't want your summer league jersey or are in multiple leagues and get two of the same color or something, giving it back to WAFC right away (i.e., unused) is the best way to go. They can reuse them in the fall if they decide to keep going with the shirts, or failing that they can sell them through the store to apply toward field costs, or give them away at tournaments to winning teams or as spirit awards.

time conflicts

My apologies if you've covered this before, but if I sign up for two leagues (ex: corporate and rec, both have games Mon/Wed), is there a chance I'll have both games happening on the same night?

Thanks,
Olivia

Yes, there is a very good

Yes, there is a very good chance the schedules overlap. You'll probably have about a game a week per team and, unfortunately, we can't control conflicts.

Age Requirement

What is it?

Re: Age Requirement

I'll doublecheck on this, but I don't believe so. Will get back to you tomorrow.

John, email me at julie (at) wafc (dot) org and let me know what your situation. Our only concern is the safety of participants. Thanks, Julie

Which league is best for me?

Hi everybody,

I am a regular on the Uchicago B team and have a basic knowledge of offenses and defenses, but am looking to improve my play this summer. I've never done league play before, but am leaning towards doing intermediate league based on the description of it and the added bonus of a challenge. If anybody has any advice, I'd appreciate it. If you want more info I can email instead.

Thanks,
Eric

Try Intermediate

It sounds like that would be about your level, but would be enough of a challenge to make the summer interesting.

thanks

much. registered as intermediate.

Baggage - Rec League

So we'd like a six-man baggage chain. And I didn't request all four of my friends when I first registered because I wasn't sure who was going to play.

How can I make sure I get all four of my baggage, and can we "chain" our registrations to be sure we all get placed on the same team?

Sorry about this - I know the spirit of Ultimate is generally to meet new people.

Thanks!

Baggage Limits

Sorry! We only allow 4 person baggage trains because having 6 people on one team who know each other gives that team too much of an advantage and disrupts the "meeting people" side of things also.

Hmmm...

I can assure you we have no advantage. None of us has ever played the sport before and several of us are very much out of shape.

But thanks for the quick reply!
